15- minute sketch 1: Portrait of a hand

Monday, August 27th, 2007

The title is of course, politically incorrect. since portraiture mostly refers to faces and mugshots, and this sketch doesn't really sport anything with a grinning face on it.

anyway, this is the first of a series which I'm naming "15- Minute Sketches". It's a no-brainer really, since the title is mainly the time description of the sketch, which are all done within, well, 15 minutes or less.

The first sketch is a tribute to the part of my body who has done most of the work for me, not including my brain. it is of course my twin assets– er… My hands (In this case, a hand).

Other parts of the body assist the speaker, but these(hands) speak themselves. By them we ask, we promise, we invoke, we dismiss, we threaten, we entreat, we deprecate; we express fear, joy, grief, our doubts, our assent, our penitence; we show moderation, profusion; we mark number and time.
      - Quintilian (Marcus Fabius Quintilianus)

Done on sketch pad, direct 0.2 filt-tip drawing pen, copic markers and an orange crayon & scanned.

I can’t draw but an artist friend told me it was quite difficult to draw/paint hands.
I must say you did a hell of a job in 15 minutes. Your hand is indeed talented.

15 mins mo lang ginawa ito? wow. alam frustration ko ang mag drawing pero talagang di ako marunong. iniimagine ko na kung bibigyan ka ng 1 oras makakabuo ka ng isang episode sa comics.

wow!! ang galing… 15 minutes lang! just to make sure… kaliwete ka?! sabi nila pag kaliwete daw e talagang talented!! galing talaga!

Sidney:
I guess in a human body, it is the second most difficult to draw next to the feet. I did struggled before, but I guess if you practice all your life it eventually becomes easier.

Haha… Grabe naman yung isang episode ng comics in one hour. Comics has both foreground and background, plus you have to take care of the dynamics of the characters para hindi stiff yung lalabas na drawing. A page of comics for me takes up around half a day, fully inked.

Rho:
Yeah, kaliwete ako. That’s why you can see that the hand there is a right hand.

Pero rightful ako sa buhay. hehe.

I’ve read somewhere that the eyes and hands are the most expressive parts of a portraiture and therefore must be drawn in great detail. And you made an efficient job in doing this in mere 15 minutes. I also draw though I can say that I’m only a beginner. I’m curious about your method of construction of the hand. It would be nice if you show us step by step. I’m sure a lot of readers would like to know how to do art. I’ve seen your works in deviant art and they are really amazing. I look forward on seeing more of your future 15-minute sketches.

thanks for visiting my blog. i cant draw a straight line; why i envy those who are gifted artistically.

redge,
Actually this isn’t that much detailed. And because I only have 15 minutes to play with, i didn’t use any pencil on it, opting to go direct with the 0.2 drawing pen. There’s not much method really involved, i just draw first as lightly as the pen can, making sure I’m drawing “lightly” before the secondary lines. I then dubbed some copic markers on it and an orange crayon from my son’s art box.

ang ganda ng pagkadrawing sa kamay. mahilig din ako magdrawing pero ang kamay ang hindi ko magawa nang tama. :D

salamat sa pagbisita sa blog ko :)

carlotta:
practice lang ang kailangan dyan. Mahirap talagang i-drawing ang kamay at first. But it becomes easier each passing try.

ladybug:
Nah, leave the pen and sheets to me. You’re better off clashing wit beyond the bar. :)

they say - some of the good artist friends i know - that an artist is an artist if he can beautifully draw the hand, the feet, the nose and the lips. my daughter must be good then. :-) nice execution, btw.

bing:
If you view it in a realist way, then it is so. But I don’t really believe art has limitations to some extent, more so bound by just one style or perception. Pablo Picasso became famous if his Cubisms and abstract, and Van Goh draws impressionistic portraits, with unrealistic colours, twisted limbs and ugly feet. Yet they were the great artists that they were. The only limitation of art really is imagination.

the same words Kay had told me..

Very professional yet so grounded. It feels so raw.

I guess that to get the lowest-rate-loans.com from banks you should present a good motivation. Nevertheless, once I have received a car loan, just because I wanted to buy a building.
